Billboard Fridays: Kanye West - New Slaves

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis stay on the lead of Billboard's Hot Rap Charts with Can't Hold Us but this week's highlight is a much more daring and influential rapper, Kanye West. He comes to this week's highlight with New Slaves, thrown on the 13th position through the sheer sales force of Yeezus, his minimalist album that currently sits on top of the Billboard 200 with 327.000 copies sold on it's first week. This was one of the songs he previewed on his Saturday Night Live show and it has one of the album's best lyrics. Sonically it is very distinct from All Falls Down, but the lyrics of New Slaves show lots of similarities to one of Kanye's first singles. That whole thing about Kanye as a black male trying to get out of a position which is inferior to white people in general but still getting caught up in racism, carnal and material temptations are pretty much the same, only explored further on New Slaves. The song was produced by Kanye West, co-produced by Teachers and had additional production done by Mike DeanTravi$ ScottNoah GoldsteinSham Joseph and Che Pope. It's a great deal of people but every since he did My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy back in Hawaii, Kanye has been surrounded by great artists and acts as kind of a maestro, chanelling through those people his vision. The song is pretty much perfect and one of the most essential songs of the year, deserving to be even higher on the chart. It ain't got a video yet, so I'll leave you with his SNL presentation, which you can see clicking above. Also check this week's top 25 above.
